Gestational diabetes and STARVING?
I've been on the gestational diabetes diet since 9/11/2008 .. and all of the sudden today, I feel so hungry! I ate my breakfast, snack, and lunch and I am still starving. It's been less than an hour since I ate and my stomach is growling. I am eating the correct servings, and this never happened before. What's going on? Seems like nothing is helping! What can I do? Thanks!

I’m a type 2 diabetic which means I eat like the GD diet all the time. When you follow it correctly, it is very satisfying and you don’t get hungry…that is, when you’re NOT pregnant. I can say that because I’ve been on fewer calories but eating as a diabetic and not been hungry, but on more calories I have days where I’m just plain hungry! The dietitians are not in your body and you have to listen to it when you’re pregnant.
The thing to do is to make sure your extra eating is of things that won’t really affect your blood sugar. This means you should make any snacks that are over and above your meal plan be from the protein or vegetable category. Some dairies are good too, the non-sweet ones, such as cottage cheese or cheese (not yogurt). I have extra leftover chicken breasts on hand for really hungry days that I can heat up. Another trick I do is to make some onion dip out of fat free sour cream and onion soup, then use it to dip veggies. It’s very satisfying and the few carbs in the dip aren’t enough to affect your blood sugars.
I think as to "what is going on" is that pregnancy is just like that some days. As long as you don’t let it impact your blood sugars it’s healthy to feed that hunger. Diving into ice cream would not be good as high blood sugars can harm the baby, but you eating more calories of something that doesn’t send them up won’t harm the baby at all.
Maybe try and drink more water. I know when Im hungry and cant eat drinking helps. I find out tomorrow my results from my 3hour glucose test. I am not looking forward to having to follow a diet.
Good luck
Eat more fiber and veggies.
NOT a medical answer at all.
Your BODY knows more than all the doctors in the world, just they would never admit to it.
THat being said, stay away from obvious no-no’s like sugar, breads and such.
Find a healthy natural snack and FEED your body, not overfeed, its just your body telling you that it needs food.
I know that the cereal crackin oat bran was a favorite of my third pregnancy, but it may not be what your body wants.
Try a protein bar with lower sugar levels and other such obvous no no’s and try that
A fresh apple or peach may also do the trick, just remember to eat a little just to curb the hunger. Eat a bit more in 15 minutes to half an hour if your body is still yelling out loud for substinance.
I agree with Cindy.
I had GD and I was the same way… starving all the time. It seems like its not enuf food to feed anyone much less a pregnant woman! lol
Just eat healthy but eat when u need to.. just don’t over do it. You will be fine. My GD was so bad I was on insulin… and then I ate much more than supposed to because the insulin helped my body anyway! lol
Good luck to you with the GD and the pregnancy! it’ll be over before u know it and its all worth it in the end!
