It runs in my family. I have insulin resistence and want to prevent gestational diabetes. I'm still early in the pregnancy so I want to take charge of this now.

The thing to remember is this- it’s not exclusively lifestyle based. I mean, a lot of women who do eat healthy and don’t gain too much weight end up with it anyway. You might not be able to prevent it, and if you can’t don’t feel bad about yourself. It’s not your fault!
However, everyone else has really great suggestions for keeping your blood sugar in check. Drinking the sugary sodas and things like that doesn’t necessarily cause GD – but it makes the symptoms worse. That’s why often the focus is on controlling it, not necessarily preventing it.
I would focus on exercise, because that alone will help your body become more sensitive to insulin. Additionally, you really want to increase your fiber intake. Studies have shown this to help reduce the risk. Best wishes!
follow a diabetic diet and count carbs
I think if you eat healthy-small meals throughout the day, avoid sugar including too much fruit or fruit juices as well as the more obvious ones (soda pop, candy, cookies, you know the drill), don’t gain too much weight. Nonetheless, do keep track of your sugar throughout the pregnancy. If despite all your efforts, you do get gestational diabetes, the best thing you can do for your baby is take care of it!!!
Talk to your Dr or contact a nutritionist. Simply watching what you eat might not help you depending on your over-all health. My best friend got GD…and she ate a very good diet but was simply over-weight when she got pregnant. My Dr’s nurse said that she had it and she’s thin…
Good luck.
When i was 6 months pregnant with my daughter i was diagnosed with gestational diabetes and hte Dr. put me on a high protein diet and told me to walk at least 30 min. a day. Hope this helps. P.S. Stay away from soda!!!
Don’t overload on sugars and pastas…..sodas, candy, gatorade…and all that other junk. Eat and drink healthily so you can have a healthy baby with a good immune system. Oh and no coffee/caffeine if you didn’t know that….to much caffeine might make you miscarry especially in the early stages.
Try to get your calories from protein and vegetables, and avoid carbohydrates.
